November 3  BATTLEMIND PLUS: TRANSITIONING FROM COMBAT TO HOME
Berkshire Community College
1350 West Street
- Pittsfield, MA (413) 842-5160
Presented by:
Kevin Lambert
The Brookfield Institute, Ware, MA
Program Development Administrator, NEADS, World Class Service Dogs, Princeton, MA

BattleMind Resilience Training, the US Army’s mental health resilience training system, is a structured approach describing the impact of the deployment cycle on service members, the changes caused by military training and immersion in a combat setting, and the cultural challenges in the transition home. This training is tailored for medical personnel.

After attending the BattleMind training, attendee’s will have a better understanding of the psychological and social stressors endured by service members both during their training, deployment and upon returning home, which will enable them to have a deeper familiarity with the “military mindset.” Understanding the reintegration process of a returned service member is often difficult without understanding the transition they are making from “solider to civilian.” This training provides participants with the ability to understand many of the moods, behaviors, and actions of returning service members while also providing medical personnel with a deeper awareness of the implications for providing appropriate medical care for service members and their families.

Pre-registration required, pre-requisite to Healing Soul Wounds on 11/17/21.

November 5 - 6  WAYNE SHORTER & ESPERANZA SPALDING IPHIGENIA
MASS MoCA
1040 MASS MoCA Way
- North Adams, MA
An intervention into myth-making, music, and opera as we know it, Iphigenia is the new collaboration between two of the most visionary and daring musical voices of our time: 11-time Grammy Award-winning composer, saxophonist, and Kennedy Center Honoree Wayne Shorter, and four-time Grammy Award-winning bassist, composer, and vocalist esperanza spalding.

Against a set designed by luminary architect Frank Gehry and with direction by the acclaimed Lileana Blain-Cruz, Shorter and spalding re-imagine the ancient tale of a daughter sacrificed to the gods. Classical and jazz forms collide in Shorter's full orchestral score, while spalding's deeply poetic and radical libretto sees Iphigenia herself multiply and stare down opera’s history.

Be among the first to witness the groundbreaking work in two preview performances at MASS MoCA on November 5 or November 6, before Iphigenia debuts as a traveling operatic production nationally.

November 17  HEALING SOUL WOUNDS: MORAL INJURY IN COMBAT VETS
Berkshire Community College
1350 West Street
- Pittsfield, MA (413) 842-5160
Presented by:
Kevin Lambert
The Brookfield Institute, Ware, MA
Program Development Administrator, NEADS, World Class Service Dogs, Princeton, MA

Beverly Prestwood-Taylor, Chief Operating Officer
The Brookfield Institute, Ware, MA

Moral injury originally described the wound caused when service members violated their own deeply held values in the context of war. For veterans, moral injury often presents concurrently with post traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury. However, the path of healing from moral injury is very different than healing from PTSD or TBI. This workshop will describe moral injury and the circumstances that can cause it; offer several effective paths for healing and will touch on "moral injury" as it may be experienced by other service providers, such as medical personnel, police officers and social workers.

Streaming
MA
Streaming Premiere: November 27, 2021

The overture to Giacchino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville opens a program connected to the concept of time. Contemporary composer Mary D. Watkins’s achingly beautiful Soul of Remembrance encapsulates through music a journey through the dark times of our history and ends with a resolute optimism for the future. Close with Franz Schubert’s revolutionary The Great (Symphony in C D.944).
