Best
outdoor activities
in Massachusetts
No matter what
outdoor activity you
are into, there is
more than likely
something for you in
Massachusetts.
Hiking, cycling,
mountain biking,
fishing, water
sports and
parasailing – you
can try them all
without leaving the
state.
The state has such a
diverse range of
landscapes, from
Cape Cod to the
Appalachians, that
deciding where to go
and what to do can
become something of
a problem. Here are
just three
suggestions to get
you started.
Cycling and
mountain biking
There are a whole
collection of
dedicated cycling
trails around the
state; some of the
most popular run
along disused
railroad tracks
converted especially
for bikes. Check out
the Cape Cod Rail
Trail, a 25-mile
route that takes you
through pine woods
and salt marshes.
Similar trails
include the
Minuteman,
Norwottuck and the
Ashuwillticook. If
you’re seriously
into the sport, you
can book organized
vacations lasting up
to six days, such as
the Massachusetts
North Shore Cycling
Tour, which includes
all meals and
accommodation.
If mountain biking
is more your thing,
there are hundreds
of miles of trails
to choose from.
Favorites include
Harold Parker State
Forest, a 35-mile
trail rated as
difficult; the
10-mile trail in
Leominster State
Forest, also rated
difficult; the
intermediate,
12-mile trail in
West Barnstable
Conservation Area;
the eight-mile long
Duxbury trail,
another rated as
intermediate; and
for newcomers, the
six-mile Cutler
Trail.
No matter how
experienced you are,
wear appropriate
safety gear: helmet,
elbow and knee
protection and
suitable footwear.
Hiking
Hiking has to be one
of the most
rewarding activities
in the state. What
could be better than
getting out in the
fresh air,
experiencing the
sense of freedom as
you walk along
deserted trails
through stunning
mountain and wooded
scenery?
Massachusetts is
fortunate in having
so many and such a
variety of trails
for you to choose
from.
The one route that
everyone has heard
of is the
Appalachian Trail.
Running from
Springer Mountain,
Georgia, in the
south, to Mount
Katahdin, Maine, in
the north, this
2,175-mile path is
the ultimate
challenge for any
hiker. However, you
don’t have to walk
its entire length;
the section passing
through
Massachusetts is a
mere 90 miles.
What’s more, as
Route 7 runs
parallel with it,
there are plenty of
bus stops, making it
easy to walk as far
as you wish.
No matter how long
you intend to be
walking, always take
a backpack
containing wet
weather clothing, a
first aid kit, food
and drink. Wear
suitable clothing
and sturdy walking
boots. While not
strictly classed as
safety gear, you may
benefit from wearing
compression shorts,
which help relieve
soreness and
stiffness, support
joints and improve
circulation. These
products have
received
positive
reviews
in
specialist magazines
and both men’s and
women’s compression
shorts are readily
available.
Canoeing and
kayaking
Canoes and kayaks
are available to
rent from a variety
of locations on
rivers and coastal
sites around the
state, such as the
Nashua River,
Sudbury River,
Concord River,
Assabet River,
Wellfleet Harbor,
Boston Harbor
Islands and Plum
Island. Safety
equipment in the
form of life vests
and helmets is
provided and should
always be worn.
What are you waiting
for? Select an
activity, get out
there and enjoy
yourself! |

The Ashuwillticook

into a 10-foot wide
paved, universally
accessible, passive

Ashuwillticook runs
parallel to Route 8
through the towns of

associated wetlands
flank much of the

in common tongue,
"the pleasant river
