May 1, 8, 15  TUNE-YARDS
MASS MoCA
1040 MASS MoCa Way
- North Adams, MA
What began as the homespun project of powerhouse musical mama Merrill Garbus, Tune-Yards has since evolved into a critically acclaimed duo — Garbus and bassist Nate Brenner — churning out endlessly danceable and inventive indie-pop tracks. A collage of soulful "rhythms and art-punk dreams" (NPR), Tune-Yards' sound is rooted in Garbus’ fiery, authoritative voice belting out pointed questions about race, gender, and body image. For their Auditory After Hours soundtrack, the duo's recorded an all-new, vocals-heavy set incorporating sounds from their recent release that will bring a whole new level of wow to the galleries.

May 16 - 23  DELving INTO DANCE HISTORY
Jacob's Pillow
358 George Carter Road
- Becket, MA
In celebration of Asian-Pacific Heritage month, join us as we DELve into discovering the rich history of Asian and Asian American dance artists from the 20th century to the present. Learn about their contributions to a broad canon of works in early modern dance and explore distinctly Asian forms of dance such as Bharatanatyam and Butoh.

Facilitated by Ann Biddle and Felice Santorelli, with guest artist Dian Dong of Chen Dance Center, this virtual workshop is offered through Dance Education Laboratory (DEL) at Jacob’s Pillow. Pulling from a recently-created Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage playlist curated by Director of Preservation Norton Owen on Jacob’s Pillow Dance Interactive site, as well as a growing online collection of dance videos and multimedia essays contextualized by leading dance scholars and thought-leaders, participants will uncover an often hidden and marginalized dance history representing Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Island-based artists. Special guest artist Dian Dong of Chen Dance Center will visit the course to share her expertise in Chinese American history and share the work of contemporary choreographer H.T. Chen.

Designed to re-envision teaching dance history as an inquiry-based and embodied practice, DELving into Dance History is for K-12 dance educators, college-level dance educators, and dance history enthusiasts to enhance remote and in-person teaching and discovery.

Open to all levels and those interested in embodied dance education practices. No previous dance experience required.

Fee: $99 per course (includes workshop materials, training, and Certificate of Completion)

May 29  TARYN SIMON: THE PIPES
MASS MoCA
1040 MASS MoCA Way
- North Adams, MA

Taryn Simon returns to MASS MoCA — following her acclaimed 2018 solo exhibition A Cold Hole + Assembled Audience — with her large-scale outdoor sculpture The Pipes which will be on long-term view on the museum campus beginning May 29. What began as an oversized concrete instrument for a cacophony of global mourning in Simon’s work An Occupation of Loss (The Armory, 2016) will be populated by the sounds, collective call and response, and movements of a living public. The 11 structures that make up the installation – which Simon designed in collaboration with Shohei Shigematsu of architecture firm OMA – are an immersive experience, offered to the public as a sacred space for reflection, impromptu performance, and stargazing.
