June 4 - 6  BERKSHIRE PLAYWRIGHTS LAB: SOME OLD BLACK MAN (ENCORE)
Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center
14 Castle Street - VIRTUAL
- Great Barrington, MA (413) 528-0100
FREE, Register to receive YouTube links

Berkshire Playwrights Lab and the Mahaiwe co-present an encore YouTube screening of James Anthony Tyler’s Some Old Black Man, starring Wendell Pierce and Charlie Robinson. The performance will be followed by an encore conversation on YouTube with the actors, the playwright, and director Joe Cacaci. The show is produced by the University Musical Society (UMS), in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Some Old Black Man was first presented by Berkshire Playwrights Lab in 2015 as a staged reading at the Mahaiwe. In 2017 BPL gave the play a full production at St. James Place, which was subsequently staged at 59E59 Theaters in New York City in 2018.

Some Old Black Man frames racial prejudice with bold probity rarely confronted and dramatized. In the play, Calvin Jones (Pierce), a hip, coolly intellectual African-American college professor, moves his 82-year-old ailing but doggedly independent father, Donald Jones (Robinson), from Greenwald, Mississippi, into his Harlem penthouse. An argument over what to eat for breakfast turns into a generational clash over race, class, and opportunity.

June 12 - October 31   ENCHANTED: A HISTORY OF FANTASY ILLUSTRATION
Norman Rockwell Museum
9 Glendale Road/Rte 183 - Stockbridge
, MA (413) 298-4100
Enchanted: A History of Fantasy Illustration explores fantasy archetypes from the Middle Ages to today. The exhibition will present the immutable concepts of mythology, fairy tales, fables, good versus evil, and heroes and villains through paintings, etchings, drawings, and digital art created by artists from long ago to illustrators working today. Mythology explores the adventures of Apollo and Thor, Perseus rescuing Andromeda with the head of Medusa, and the labours of Hercules; fairy tales depict the worlds of elves, fairies, and mermaids, and conjure dreams of Little Nemo in Slumberland, Alice in Wonderland, and Cinderella; heroes and villains follow the exploits of Arthurian legends, Prince Valiant, Conan the Barbarian, and The Lord of the Rings; and haunting images of sorcerers and witches, and battles between angels and demons embody the struggle between good and evil.

June 13  ASTON MAGNA: EARLY DUOS FOR FORTEPIANO AND VIOLIN (VIRTUAL)
Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center
14 Castle Street - VIRTUAL
- Great Barrington, MA (413) 528-0100
FREE

Mozart’s very first published works (at age seven!) were sonatas for keyboard “with violin accompaniment.” The keyboard was either a harpsichord (a plucked stringed instrument) or the new-fangled fortepiano, which evolved into our modern piano (percussion instruments). He continued to compose these duo sonatas throughout his life, and their development, into even-handed duos and into concerto-like challenges for both instruments, traces a remarkable vision of the rhetorical possibilities of the duo. The sonata presented in this concert was composed by the 18-year-old Mozart, shortly after the death of his mother. C.P.E. Bach — Johann Sebastian’s most successful son — composed prolifically for the duo, and the Fantasy being played on this concert is one of his most experimental works, harmonically. It is a late work, composed a year before his death, and he subtitled it “C.P.E. Bach’s Feelings.” Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint Georges was a mulatto violinist who distinguished himself in Paris and elsewhere as a musician and was actively involved in the French Revolution. Beethoven’s “Spring Sonata” is among his most popular chamber works. Its pastoral qualities and its symphonic structure have made it a lyrical favorite of violinists.

June 19  LAUREN HENDERSON LIVE AT THE FOUNDRY
West Stockbridge
2 Harris Street
- West Stockbridge, MA
Lauren Henderson live at The Foundry!

Saturday, June 19, 2021 at 7 p.m.
(Rain date: Sunday, June 20 at 2 p.m.)

Internationally acclaimed jazz and Latin jazz vocalist Lauren Henderson and her ensemble headline the first of The West Stockbridge Historical Society’s 2021-2022 live jazz concert series. Henderson’s distinct yet versatile sound has been hailed by The New York Times as “somewhere between a comforting whisper and a cogent declaration … [that] blurs bossa nova, Cuban bolero, lounge jazz and low-lit R & B, reflecting Ms. Henderson’s own mix of North American and Caribbean heritage.” The recording artist, composer, and producer broke the JazzWeek–Top 5 chart with The Songbook Session (2020).

June 26  TOUR OF BILL NOBLE'S VERMONT GARDEN
Berkshire Botanical Gardens
5 West Stockbridge Street
- Stockbridge, MA (413) 298-3926
Author and garden designer Bill Noble will lead participants on a tour of his celebrated Vermont garden, which surrounds an 1830s Vermont farmhouse and barn, with stone walls, fields and views of neighboring farms and distant mountains. The garden reflects Bill's horticultural path from market gardener to garden designer. The garden features a bountiful perennial garden, vegetable garden and orchard, rock gardens and shrub borders, surrounded by fields and meadows. The focal point is a mixed border of shrubs and hardy perennials, while remnants of barn foundations offer a setting for alpines, ferns, ornamental grasses and shrubs. Foliage and texture predominate. The garden is an ongoing experiment with plants and ideas gathered from other gardens and gardeners. It is the subject of Noble’s book, Spirit of Place: The Making of a New England Garden, published in June, 2020 by Timber Press. Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase. Refreshments will be provided on-site. Participants are responsible for their own transportation and will receive the address upon registration $70/Members: $65

June 27  ASTON MAGNA: THE STRING TRIOS OF MOZART (VIRTUAL)
Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center
14 Castle Street - VIRTUAL
- Great Barrington, MA (413) 528-0100
FREE

Mozart composed chamber music for from two to seven players, and no matter how large the ensemble, he had a gift for filling the musical space. His two Duos for violin and viola are composed in a way that creates a full texture; one feels nothing is missing. His quartets and quintets are among the glories of the chamber music repertoire. The same is true for his one completed string trio — a Divertimento for violin, viola and cello. The title implies a lighter, less serious work than his quartets, but this is decidedly not the case here. It is a full-fledged, sonata-like work with two extra movements: a second minuet, and a very elaborate variations movement. Mozart clearly enjoyed the compositional challenge of this ensemble and began another, in G Major, completing only half of an opening movement. A recent vogue in completing his unfinished works has rendered us some fresh new Mozart.

Daniel Stepner on violin; Marcus Thompson on viola; Jacques Lee Wood on cello
